Here's some information about, me, Lois DeWitt, and how the Free Online Art Classes concept originated. I've been teaching private art classes for over thirty years. Some of my students suggested that I take my classes beyond my little studio and put them online. So I began this website--Free Online Art Classes.com. To date, the website has my classes for Acrylic Painting, Oil Painting, Drawing, Collage, Oil Pastels, Conte Crayon, Printmaking and Discovering The Artist Within You. And, I am creating videos to augment these easy, fun and rewarding lessons: many of the skills and techniques are clearly presented. In addition, there are exciting new pages on "Artful Cooking," "Artful Inspiration," "Art Tours and Travel," "Artists and Artisans," and "The Artist's Loft." Daily I am linking with wonderful, creative people: artists, writers, art therapists, designers--and I plan to expand Free Online Art Classes.com to offer a rich and expansive tapestry of resources and information about the creative world. Yes, all of the classes and videos are FREE! AND, when you take a class, at any level of learning, you will have me as your very own art coach--absolutely free! Just e-mail me pictures of your artwork in progress, with your questions, comments or suggestions, and I will provide friendly, professional support and guidance, just like I do with my students! It's all free and the very best way to learn! Free quality art instruction means you can spend a little more for quality art materials. Skimping on materials negatively affects the quality of your artwork. That is why I have put together Art Kits with Dick Blick Art Supply for all of the classes--to assure that the time you spend learning and working is not compromised by using inferior products. And it is super easy to order online. Click on the logo below to see the wide range of art materials products Dick Blick offers!
Oil Paintings of Fort Fisher
These paintings are from my "Fort Fisher Series," created in 2006 - 2008.I find the North Carolina coastal area inspiring. There are forests of small, scrubby oaks, maples and stately long-leaf pines. The forest floor is spotted with rust-colored pine straw and white sand. Blond-colored grasses glisten under the dark trees. The forest has two shorelines--to the West is the Cape Fear River and to the East is the Atlantic Ocean. Among the forest inhabitants are rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, crows, hawks and small, dark brown deer. This is a rare place, where the Venus Fly Trap grows wild. Here are some videos of the North Carolina coastal subject matter that inspires me! I hope you enjoy them as much as I did making them! The Magic Trees of Fort Fisher Beautiful Dunes Exploring Carolina Beach State Park February At The Beach With Charley

Even in the hot summer months, a cool breeze blows. The beach is expansive, with grassy dunes along stretches of smooth, beige-colored sand. At historic Fort Fisher, small oak trees, scoured constantly by the sea wind, grow into twisted shapes.

In autumn, when long blue shadows sweep across the dunes and the sky goes from dusty orange to deep red, a cold wind whips the sand and makes the grasses hiss. In the cold, green waves not far off shore, groups of dolphins are weaving glistening black arcs. Soon it will be dark.

A gray mist rolls in from the sea as the sun disappears and the breeze is chilled. At Fort Fisher, the grassy mounds that once protected Confederate soldiers and their cannon, darken and fade into the night.

In the morning a brisk ocean wind blows the grasses on the dunes. Overhead, seagulls cry and shore birds run along the waves. There is no one out here now. My dog, Charley, looks up at me. He is asking to be let off the leash so he can run along the beach and chase the gulls.

Several years ago, large rocks were placed here at Fort Fisher to keep the waves from eroding the shoreline. It was clear this historic Civil war site would soon disappear under the waves unless a revetment was built.
